California REALTORS(R) Asked to Participate in Signature Gathering Campaign for Property Tax Portability Plan
During the week of October 9, the Board of Directors for the California Association of REALTORS(R) (C.A.R.) voted to place the property tax portability proposal on the 2018 ballot. As part of California's ballot initiative requirements, a minimum number of signatures from registered voters must be obtained for the proposal to qualify for the ballot. Here are some things you need to know:
What Is Being Asked of REALTORS(R)?
You should have recently received information mailed to you from C.A.R., which includes a petition and information on the proposal. Every REALTOR(R) is asked to sign the petition, obtain four (4) additional signatures and mail the information back to C.A.R. by December 31.
How Many Signatures Are Required?
Consultants hired by C.A.R. estimate that the minimum number of signatures needed to qualify for the ballot would be 585,407. However, often times a significant portion of the signatures are ineligible and therefore not counted. This could be for a variety of reasons, including submitting signatures from individuals not registered to vote and listing duplicate signatures from one individual. To account for this, the consultants recommended collecting and submitting one million signatures. You can read the entire report from the Property Tax Basis Portability Task Force HERE.
